The first thing I realized about this book is how drawn in I’d become right from the very first page — in fact, I was drawn in before I opened the book, from reading the blurb. The idea of a dead man matchmaking his friend with his lover was a unique premise to a story (one that isn’t a paranormal) and immediately grabbed my attention. Despite my rather unceremonious description just now, this issues that this book deals with are very serious and are dealt with a real way by the characters. The more multi-faceted the characters became and the more the author bared them open to the reader, the more I appreciated a story that didn’t gloss over the difficult parts in their relationship, and instead used the story to work through the characters’ problems. Sometimes this made the story difficult to read, but I felt more for the characters than I would have otherwise. They really worked for their HEA.
This first book of the Men of Honor series by S.E. Jakes tells the story of Tanner and Damon. Tanner is an Army Ranger who has spend the last year mourning the loss of his best friend Jesse on the force and in their Special Ops team after his untimely death in battle. Left in a position where Jesse was slowly dying and all he could do for his friend was ease his pain, they have time to talk before Jesse passes and Tanner is rescued 10 hours later. He is left with a request from Jesse — to wait one year and then visit his boyfriend Damon, the owner of a BDSM club and a famous local Dom and repeat to him his dying wish — that Tanner sub for Damon for one night. Tanner is a soldier through and through. He is honorable, honest, tough and smart. There is no way that he can deny his friend’s request, no matter that he’s a top and has never bottomed for anyone, much less subbed. BDSM is not his scene, though he doesn’t begrudge anyone their lifestyle. Yet, in honor of his fallen friend and hoping to alleviate his lasting guilt that he couldn’t save his friend, he heads to Crave at the one year anniversary of Jesse’s death, needing to bear this one night of submission to put his grief behind him.
Damon has been grieving for Jesse for the past year, caught in a helpless cycle of denial, pain, and guilt over Jesse’s death and the failure of their relationship. He feels guilty that he fought with Jesse before he left. From past experience in the forces himself, he knows that no soldier can go into battle with other things on his mind and expect to make it out alive. He also feels guilty for the secrets he’s kept from Jesse, from everyone over his life but his best friend LC, and wonders if he had confided in Jesse, would it have made a difference in their relationship anyway? Would it have balanced a relationship that was built upon Damon fixing a broken Jesse and not asking for anything in return? When Tanner comes to the club with his request, it angers him — at Tanner, at himself, and at Jesse, who wouldn’t leave the forces for him and got himself killed. Therefore, he takes Jesse’s dying wish, and in anger, forces a public scene on Tanner, on a man who he knows isn’t a sub in a mockery of Jesse’s dying wish.
Despite their explosive first meeting, both Damon and Tanner can’t seem to stay away from one another. As the days go on, as their relationship progresses into something neither one expected, they start to realize that maybe Jesse knew what he was doing when he set up their meeting. Though both of them seem to make mistakes at every turn, they start to understand that being vulnerable to one another and together is better than being safely closed off and alone, and that what they expect of each other they should be able to live up to themselves. They have a lot to learn about themselves before a relationship between them can actually work, but it is worth it to try. Still, they are both stubborn fools and no matter how they might initially identify as a Dom or sub, or how those identities change over the course of the story, it is like pulling teeth to get either of them to really submit to the other in any way.
Though there is some variation on the roles they play (and they get very complicated when they, or we, try to understand them as either Dom or sub), both of these men are Alpha males (ergo, lots of masculine growling, fighting, and sexing 😀 ). For Damon, being a Dom is a part of his life that has grown out of his fear to relinquish control in any way, to anyone. For Tanner, he hasn’t allowed himself to admit that what he really desires is to bottom. Originally, he sees this as submitting (especially since the situation is in a BDSM context) and he hates that his attraction to Damon is strong enough to get him to give up his cherry for the first time, no matter how many times he insists that he’s a top. Damon does all he can to steer the progression of their relationship into a sort of training for Tanner to become his sub, though there isn’t really anything in play but power dynamics (no whips, etc.). Their relationship is a bit of a runaway train and it is Damon’s only way of pretending that he’s in control of it. Though he has been outgrowing the BDSM community for some time, only staying with it for Jesse’s sake (who needed to submit to him), it is his only way of controlling his feelings for Tanner and the guilt he feels. On the other hand, Tanner very soon realizes that he needs Damon and more importantly, that Damon needs him, and he sets out to fight for Damon when Damon starts to break down and refuses to fight for himself. The dynamics of the characters in this story, and also the secondary characters (LC’s book is next, but he is a very important character in this book as well) are so layered that it was thrilling to read this book, which relied mostly on internal conflict to usher the plot along. I think this can be difficult for a reader to enjoy unless it is done very well, because having so much conflict within a relationship can make the book overly angsty, while at the same time turning the reader off of the characters (too whiny, TSTL, etc.). This book was set up to be an ansty read from the very beginning, but I was pleased to find out that the characters don’t dwell on their emotions too much, just enough to convey their feelings to the reader, so the book didn’t feel overly dramatic.
This book also surprised me in a way that very few books have before. Rarely have I read a book that deals with BDSM where the culture isn’t the center of the story. Here, BDSM is used as a means for the characters to express their desires, expectations, and pre-concieved roles in their relationship. The story isn’t actually about BDSM at all, and in fact, when the characters start to really investigate their feelings and desires and discover this, they realize that they are outgrowing those roles, they’re evolving just as their relationship is, and it is away from the community. Once they find the tools to express those feelings and emotions, they start to investigate having a rather vanilla (though still very rough and tumble) relationship. I appreciated this move from the author, because it showed that she takes her characters seriously and allows them to drive the story, which is what makes this story compelling in the first place.
There are a lot of other things in this book to be admired: there is a subtle, yet significant mystery subplot about various attacks happening outside of the club that was handled very well and tied in with the story perfectly; the story is very action oriented, which works well with the characters, who are action driven men; the descriptions are very sensory detailed and the prose is excellent; there is quite a bit of sex in the story, and every scene was needed — in fact, this makes sense because sex is a way that these two characters can work through their problems without actually having to own them through dialogue, so the sex scenes often freed them to further their emotional growth within themselves and their relationship; and finally, but maybe most importantly, this story was a real page-turner for me. I didn’t want to put it down.
This is a book that a lot of readers will like. Those who like the hurt/comfort theme will be satisfied, though the characters often trade those roles. Also, those who love angst will love this book, though I didn’t think it was mired in it. Instead, I felt more like this book was serious and dealt with real people who are going through extraordinarily difficult times in their lives. It might be heavy at times and a serious story, but it isn’t angsty because the characters don’t tend to brood. Though there is a small mystery subplot, there isn’t enough to satisfy mystery lovers. I call the subplot a mystery because of the expert way that SE Jakes wrote the tension, suspense, and slow revelation of the impact and meaning it has for the character’s lives. In reality, this story is about a relationship, and how two men work diligently to better it from start to finish. I can’t wait to read the other books in this series. The second book, due later this year is about LC, Damon’s best friend and one of my favorite characters. A lot of his story is told here.

Nice review, Cole. I’m not a huge fan of BDSM, but the way you’ve described this book makes me want to read it. I love a story with lots of character growth, and it sounds like the BDSM element is what allows these guys to grow into their HEA, even as they leave it behind (like training wheels?) :lol:. Lol, yes Andy. I guess it was like training wheels. I think they needed a framework to use to work out their places in the relationship and come to terms with how they view themselves accordingly. The BDSM element was there, and at first it seemed like the book was going to be heavy with it, but I think that was just because they’re both so angry. The only real part of BDSM that comes to play in their relationship is the power dynamic, which they work very hard on shifting, studying, and changing to fit them personally. I think that, had they had nothing to do with BDSM, they would still have to do this because of the types of men they are, who have a lot to reconcile between their actions and desires.
So, I wouldn’t worry about the BDSM. If you read this book, it might make you nervous at first, but they’re really just two very masculine guys with a lot of pain.
This sounds excellent – the way the relationship changes and the fact that BDSM is not a central theme makes me very inclined to pick it up. Great review, Cole, thank you!

There’s quite a bit of power play, a brief use of a dildo, and some binding, but that’s all. Really though, BDSM is used much more psychologically, as a defense for Damon and as a way for Tanner to understand that being a bottom doesn’t make him weak.
It’s a great book. At first it seemed like the BDSM was going to be very heavy, but that wasn’t the case. Happy reading!

You’re right on the money there. I have to really be in the mood to read a book with BDSM, because that’s usually the focus of the story. Here, that isn’t the case, and I was delighted to learn that over the course of the book. It didn’t seem that way at first. I thought I was getting into a book with heavy BDSM, but the characters really surprised me. I knew that I needed to talk about that in the review because a lot of people don’t really like to read it. The book does have a lot of power play, yes, but it is the way they try to work through their relationship problems, which they would have done if they had nothing to do with BDSM.

I loved LC as well and I can’t wait to read his story. I keep thinking about Styx and Paulo, and wonder which one he’ll end up with. I think I know, but I bet he’ll drag the choice out forever 😀

I’m glad to hear that! Sometimes I’m in the mood to read BDSM, and I have to be before I pick up the book because the focus of the story is always on BDSM. I was so happy that this wasn’t the case with Tanner and Damon. It is pretty much all Damon knows, and he clings to it though he knows he’s outgrown the scene. It adds something wonderful to the story, and I think that anyone can enjoy the story, even those who aren’t into BDSM. Anyway, it is really only power dynamics and binding, then some rough sex.

It is! It’s a great book. The BDSM content is minimal, and mostly wrapped up in their relationship, though they use cuffs with sex often.

I passed on this one due to the BDSM theme because I usually find that stories like this become ritualistic too easily and not really character driven. But this sounds good. I don’t mind powerplay as long as it’s not one-sided or predictable.

The characters really drive this story, and the author was brave enough to follow their lead when they pointed away from the setting she had made for them. I appreciated that and it made me love the book all the more!

Great reading although I personally felt that Damon responsability in their fist meeting is pushed back favouring instead Tanner insecurities, and that´s is a bit of niggle for me 😕
Anyway, you should organize a poll for LC 💡 My bets are all in Paulo: the tat gift and bottoming will seal the deal :XD: :DX: but things doesn´t look very good for him :sceptic: I don´t think the author will risk a threesome so either Styx is not so nice after all or he gets book3 😉 Of course who knows what the author is getting ready for us 😆

That excerpt is a good one, I think. It shows a lot about the characters deep enough into the story, but still right on the cusp of the beginning of their transformations. It also isn’t a big scene in the book, which is why excerpts often bother me.

Just finished reading this. It’s good, though a bit different than what I expected. I was a bit afraid I’d be disappointed since I had time to built it up in my mind after reading your review :-). My only niggle is I feel LC high jacked the story and Tanner and Damon’s story is almost like a prequel to his book. I’m not entirely sure I’d feel that way if had stumbled on this on my own but now I knew to keep an eye out for him. I wonder who else is going to get their story apart from LC and Styx.

I think that might be the case, but we won’t really know until Bound by Law is out. Who knows? Damon and Tanner’s story might continue there in a similar way that LC’s was here. I’d like it if that is the case, it would be a true series where we never really leave the characters behind. Also, it would make sense because Damon and LC are so close. I have no idea who the third book could be about! Unless she throws us for a loop and makes the third book about all of them in the first two… I could dig that 🙂

I grew more used to BDSM in general lately and have read even heavier books than this one seems to be from your review (although there are some things which are still too heavy and sometimes even a turn off for me). However, it is the psychological aspect of the relationship which seems to be so fascinating in this one. Thank you.

I think I said in a comment above that I do have times that I like to read BDSM for the scenarios, if I’m in that kind of mood. But, for the most part, the reason that BDSM books are always hit/miss with me is that they either don’t show that the culture and relationship should first be about the power dynamic and the evolution of the relationship (especially in a romance) or they don’t challenge the D/s roles in any way. I love books like this, where the characters evolve into or out of their roles throughout the story, or realize that they need to create new roles suited to them.
That’s why this book felt truly original to me. It was wonderful and a book that I have no doubt I will read over and over again for a long time 🙂 I hope you love the book and I’d love to know what you think when you read it! As always 😀

That really depends. You may not like BDSM, but how do you feel about handcuffs and rough sex? There really isn’t much more than that except for one scene in the beginning, though that one isn’t much worse than binding in public.
It’s really up to you. I’d say that it is probably okay, but I don’t know your limits, so I’m not sure. Feel free to ask me more questions if it will help you decide 🙂

Read this yesterday because of your recommendation Cole and I agree that it is a good book where the BDSM theme doesn’t get too stiff.
I still get irritated with the tendency this theme has to always say that the ones new to the scene “don’t know themselves”, “don’t know what they like” or “what they deep down want”. The rhetoric is very similar to what is used when you blame victims for whatever happened to them.
I do understand wanting to do the forbidden or something out of your comfort zone, something that secretly turns you on, but usually in BDSM this is handled in such a bombastic way that it gets ridiculous to me. It doesn’t have to mean that you don’t know yourself just because you’ve never bottomed and suddenly discover you like it.
So I liked the book but I had this running irritation towards Damon for using this rhetoric. As Tanner says, just because he cares about Damons needs, it doesn’t make him a sub. It’s a pretty natural thing to care abut your partners need imo? I didn’t get why the topping/bottoming issue had to be so tied into submission/dominance either.
I would love to one day see a character answer back to this stale line about not know who they are and just say, hey, I do know who I am, I am just trying something new here!

Yes, I understand what you mean. But, like everything else, it only bothers me when this happens and there is no reason why, or it isn’t explored. I actually felt like that it was necessary here, because it was the impetus for their emotional growth. Maybe it could have been done in a different way, IDK, but that would make this a different story. So maybe it is annoying because you see it a lot, but it only bothers me when there is no real reason. We all learn new things about ourselves every day, and when your emotions have been stunted by grief or guilt, not to mention at a young age, then I see that as pretty realistic. Just my opinion, but that’s why that didn’t bother me at all.
I dont know Cole… It DID irritate me here, but I still think it’s a good story. There is some fundamental idea about some hidden personality, and a more TRUE one, that only comes out in its real form during D/S. I can’t agree with that psychology and I don’t understand it. I guess I don’t understand why trying something new, out of your comfort zone, has to be explained so bombastically, that is must include talk of personality change? Does it have to be so serious?
Yeah, I can see what you’re saying, but I didn’t see that here because I never really felt like they were practicing true D/s, just that they used those roles as a way to try to understand their lives. That’s why they realized they didn’t need them — neither one was either a true Dom or a true sub, and they never really used those roles, although Damon tried to understand their relationship in that way. That’s why it didn’t work for them.
But, I agree that that often happens in BDSM books, which is why I sometimes have a hard time understanding the relationships at the center of those books. It is just another way to take a shortcut on explaining the relationship to the reader.
I’m going to get this one for sure. Cole your review was great and I loved all the comments by others. I think I will really enjoy this one. BDSM is an ok theme for me, but I really like the military aspect of it. Thanks. 😀

You know you’re bad for my restraint, right…? :wallbash: So, yes, of course I went and got it, and read it.
I really enjoyed it. There were two continuity errors that threw me out of the story, briefly due to editing issues, but I doubt anyone else would even catch them. *sigh* One I read four times trying to figure out if she really wrote it that way or if it were my dyslexia, but in the end it appears she wrote it that way. Overall, though I really enjoyed it.
I’m looking forward to LC’s story. Like you I’m not entirely sure which of the guys he’ll end up with.

Oh Yeah… Chapters 5 and 7. Chapter 5 you have Damon naked and Tanner in just jeans, and two sentences later it’s reversed. (That’s the one I had to read 4 times to make sure it wasn’t the dyslexia.) Chapter 7 they were eating lasagna, salad, bread and wine, and suddenly Tanner briefly had steak. *blink*
Continuity is a pet peeve for me so take it with a grain of salt. That is true for both reading and video. I really not a person you *ever* want to watch something with. My partner used to just glare at me. 😆
That said, I did enjoy it, and I am looking forward to the next one. So don’t take those two comments as a… well, really bad thing, because it really didn’t take anything away from this story, and I do want to stress that. 🙂

I finally got the chance to read this Cole, and I have to say your review was great, this book really IS about a relationship and how each man comes to terms with said relationship. I loved Tanner and Damon. Their encounters were sometimes tense, but I felt that there was always a part of each of them that somehow knew that they were IT for each other. I quite enjoyed Bound by Honor and can’t wait to read LC’s story. I loved that LC and Damon were so devoted to each other and their friendship. I wish I could find out when the second book is coming out *pouts*. Thanks again Cole for another great review and rec!

Thanks Elaine 🙂 Wave is right, the second book should be coming out in August. I’m very curious about the third book. Whose story is that going to be? My favorite guess is that it’s going to be a continuation of the two previous couples. Or, I suppose it could be whichever guy Law doesn’t choose 🙂
